Should you make it first or monetize it first?

What was your first reaction to that question?

There are four schools of thought here, check them out…

The Perfectionist: Of course I would need to have it created first….well at least 90% of it before I can I can confidently monetize it.

The Doer: Yeah, I’m gonna monetize it first so I can get my work out to the world and prove my concept has potential. Then I’ll make it. No sense in wasting any time + I want to get paid now!

The Contrarian: I want it all. I want to do both simultaneously. Monetize it while creating it bit by bit.

Now you might be wondering what are you talking about?

…creating a course

…starting a business

…starting a blog

…creating a new offer

But guess what? It doesn’t matter.

You might even have thought, I need more information before I can give an answer, and THAT would be the fourth camp.

The Need More Info’ers: Let me analyze, think it through and then make up my mind.

I could easily argue for any of those points of view and make a case.

At different times of my life and business, I’ve fallen into each one of those categories.

What I noticed was this:

The way you do anything is the way you do everything.

Whichever camp you were in.

Whatever your initial reaction was tells a lot about how you are showing up, in your life and your business.

Here’s what I mean:

The Perfectionist: Of course I would need to have it created first….well at least 90% before I can I can confidently monetize it.

The Perfectionist cares deeply about perception and what others think. Fear of judgement, not being good enough, visibility and fear or failure creep in… and if you’re not careful, can keep you from moving forward.

This isn’t just about your business, but how you show up in life. How you get dressed and how you present yourself. It also shows up when trying a new sport or activity that you’ve never done before. Let’s say you’re going skiing for the first time, you probably want to hide and practice privately with nobody you know around you so you don’t look bad. Once you’ve got it figured out, then you’re willing to go out with friends and show your stuff.

The Perfectionist has phenomenal attention to detail. They notice so many of the little things that add to creating an experience. They are great planners. They love mastery and want to be the best at what they do.

The Doer: Yeah, I’m gonna monetize it first so I can get my work out to the world and prove my concept has potential. Then I’ll make it. No sense in wasting any time + I want to get paid now!

The Doer is spontaneous, often acts before thoroughly thinking everything through. The Doer gets bored easily and is always moving on to something new. The doer is a great starter, but not always a great finisher. The Doer isn’t afraid to try new things, but often doesn’t stick around until mastery.

The Doer activates others to move forward. They get results fast and get things done.

The Contrarian: I want it all. I want to do both simultaneously. Monetize it while creating it bit by bit.

The Contrarian is also known as the “big dreamer” who defies the status quo. They like to be different and sometimes others look at them like they are crazy. They make up their own rules, sometimes so fast they don’t really think things through. They get easily frustrated when they see others around them mediocracy. They have an opinion and always pick a side, often the less popular side because contrarians are rebels.

Contrarians read between the lines and carve out their own path for themselves and others.

The Need More Info’ers: Let me analyze, think it through and then make up my mind.

The Need More Info’ers are very logical. They thoroughly analyze data, make projections and see how a decision made today can impact them 10 steps down the road. They can get stuck in analysis paralysis, often overthinking and not trusting themselves to make a quick decision. They don’t like change. Others are often saying to them “C’mon! Let’s just do it!” They get stuck in their head.

The Need More Info’ers love numbers and notice trends that others are oblivious to. They are usually 10 steps ahead (in their mind) than others. They devour new information, love to study and often are loaded full of credentials and experience far beyond their peers.

Think about which one of these ways of thinking resonates most with you.

You’re likely a blend of more than one, that’s ok. Pick which ones lands the most with you.

Notice if there was one that triggered you?

Have you got it?

Ok. Write it down.

My type is _____________.

Now I want you to think of where you are in your business right now.

Be honest.

Write it down.

My business status is currently  ________________.

Then think of where you want to be. What does it look like? What do you have? What does the other side look like.

Write it down.

My dream business looks like ____________________.

Great! Good job.

Looking back at which type you resonated most with, I want you to write down three things that you accomplished as a result of BEing in that way of thinking.

For example The Perfectionist might say things like:

I received a full scholarship for college

I got a promotion in my last job

I created a beautiful brand

Now your turn. Write down three great things that you created as a result of that way of BEing.

Accomplishment #1: ______________________

Accomplishment #2: ______________________

Accomplishment #3: ______________________

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Seriously, great job!

Congratulations.

Take a moment to honour your achievements.

Now take a look at where you want to be with your business and your life.

Write down three ways you are holding yourself back by BEing in that same type you resonated most with.

Again, The Perfectionist might say things like:

I have been sitting on my offer idea for the last 6 months and am still not moving forward.

I spend hours twiddling with fonts or images rather than putting myself out there and making offers.

I pretend to be further ahead than I am because I worry people won’t see value in my services. Because of this I feel incongruent with my messaging.

Now it’s your turn.

Be brutally honest here. Don’t worry it’s for your eyes only.

I’m currently holding myself back by #1: ______________________

I’m currently holding myself back by #2: ______________________

I’m currently holding myself back by #3: ______________________

There is no judgement here, just awareness.

This is important.

Be kind to yourself.

With that in mind, you’ve heard the saying what got you here won’t get you there.

As much as you’ve achieved success or stayed safe in your previous way of thinking, I want you to look over what you just wrote down. What you said you wanted.

On the other side of having, who is that woman?

How does she show up?

What does she think?

How does she behave?

What does she not tolerate?

How is she serving and making a difference?

Here’s the fun part.

What are three ways of thinking or BEing that would make those results inevitable?

Here’s a few before and after examples:

If you’ve been afraid of failure —> a new way of being could be immunity to criticism

If you’re been afraid to not look perfect —> being vulnerable and asking for help

If you’ve been afraid of responsibility —> true desire to lead a movement and a mission that will change the world

You get the idea.

Trust that the first answers that comes to mind are the right answers for you.

What is it?

I am committed to this new way of BEing #1: ______________________

I am committed to this new way of BEing #2: ______________________

I am committed to this new way of BEing #3: ______________________

Great job in writing these down. That’s the easy part.

How will you practice BEing that way?

In your day to day life, not just in your business.

How can you BE in that space every single day?

It’s not about changing who you are. It’s about uncovering that part of you who has been hiding. Afraid. Staying safe.

It’s about letting her come out to play. She’s already within you.

It’s her that has the ability to make your success and your next level inevitable.

Solidify these new ways of being with daily actions that demonstrate these characteristics.

Have fun with this one!

In a funk from not hitting your goals? Or have you hit an upper limit?

In a funk from not hitting your goals? Or have you hit an upper limit?

Are you in a funk from not hitting your goals? Or did you crush your big goals, but it was followed with a tailspin chaser and downward spiral of “oh no it’s gonna come crashing down!” because you blew your mind, and now you’re worried it’s all gonna go away? You’re...

How your business is a reflection of your view of business.
