Let’s get real for a sec…
Ever feel like you’re fighting for results in your biz?
Like you’re putting in the reps but not seeing growth?
Like you’re on an uphill climb and desperate for a win?
If so, know you’re not alone. I’ve been there (plenty of times), and I’ve figured out the pattern of breakthroughs.
If you’re feeling a little fatigued in your biz, or like you’re putting in the work without seeing the results you want… this is for you.
I’m embarrassed to share this, but here you go…
How to Win in Business (Even When You’re Not Seeing the Results You Want… Yet)
Every summer, my family goes on a cycling trip in the Okanagan Valley wine country. We go with another family, so my kids hang out with their kids and my husband and I hang out with this couple.
And the adults, we cycle every morning for a week (so we can feel good about eating great food and drinking good wine lol).
But here’s the thing…
My husband and this other couple are avid cyclists.
I am not.
Every single time we cycle together, I’m last.
I’m the one in the back, keeping my head down, gasping for breath, and trying to draft off the back wheel of the person in front of me.
I never really get to look up and enjoy the scenery because I’m always working so much harder than them (because they cycle consistently… and I do it a handful of times per year).
Here’s the thing: getting started is always the hardest part of doing anything.
I know this.
Before our trip, I’d been meaning to add more consistent exercise to my routine but was having a hard time getting started.
So, when I got off that week trip of consistent cycling back in July, I told myself, “Okay, Christina… you’ve already done the hardest part of getting started. Keep up the momentum.”
I looked at my next week and decided I was going to fit in some cycling. And I was going to do it every day.
As a non-cyclist, this was a bit of a leap. To support myself, I jumped on my e-bike, which is still good exercise but it’s much easier than a normal road bike.
I can adjust the resistance on my e-bike, so when I want to work harder, I can… but I can also have some help when I’ve made a big push or I get tired. Now I can exercise, but I’m able to look up and enjoy the scenery around me, too.
After about a week, I was feeling stronger, more grounded, and clearer in my mind. Even my work was getting more effective.
So that was back in the first week of July.
Now it’s been 7 weeks of consistent cycling, getting out there whether I felt like it or not, and just getting some movement in.
Something that’s been exciting to see is my progress when I cycle with my husband. At the beginning of summer, he was faster than me (yes, even with my e-bike… ok that is embarrassing to admit!).
But now, because I’ve been consistent (and I have the help of my e-bike), I’m way faster than him. He’s the one in the back, gulping for air! Oh just a little bit of payback, honey!!!
The other day, I think he was getting a bit tired of that because he asked me to cycle with him… but he asked me to use my normal road bike. Not my new bestie, the e-bike.
For a second, I was like, “Ew, no, I don’t want to work that hard today.” But I decided… it’s okay. I’ll get on my pedal bike and it’ll be a good test of my fitness. I can do this.
We rode for about an hour, looped around, and eventually finished our ride.
Obviously, he was faster than me (he competed at world-level for triathlon so ya know!), but what was interesting was… my fitness app kept telling me there were segments of my ride where I performed my personal best… ever!
Some sections were my second best, third best… but there were many times in my ride that were the best I’d ever done.
So what I realized was…
I’d done the hardest part (getting started).
And I’d created a support system for myself that I could lean on when times were hard (my e-bike).
And I’d been consistent and gotten out there on my bike (just about every day).
7 weeks later, I haven’t seen any real change on the scale (yet)... but my fitness is better. I’m stronger. I’m building muscle, strength, and my cardiovascular system.
If I were to quit now because I haven’t seen the results I want on the scale, then I’m removing any chance of hitting my goal weight.
This was such a powerful lesson for me, especially because it directly relates to business.
So many business owners are out there putting in the reps, showing up every day, and doing the work… but they’re not yet seeing the results they want.
Maybe they don’t have the clients they want, the revenue they need, or the time freedom… yet.
Your external results may not reflect the effort you’ve put in… yet.
I want to remind you that the results you see today are a direct reflection of what you did 90 days ago (or 7 weeks ago, in my case).
The numbers are going to move. The results are going to come.
Notice all the ways you’re getting stronger, building business muscle, and setting yourself up for success in the meantime.
If you stop and start, you’ll never get to the goal.
So stay consistent.
Keep pedaling.
You’re getting so much stronger.
And be willing to ask for help. Be willing to lean on support. In this case my e-bike – in business, a mentor and community.
You’ve got this!
